Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
At Gracie Barra Spicewood, we want you to feel confident and informed as you begin your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive. If you have additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!
1. What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing like a T-shirt and workout pants or shorts (preferably without zippers). If you already have a gi (uniform), feel free to bring it. We also provide loaner gis for beginners who don’t have one. Be prepared to train barefoot and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated!
2. Do I need prior experience to join?
No experience? No problem! Our programs are beginner-friendly and designed to help students of all skill levels feel comfortable and succeed. Whether you’re new to martial arts or looking to refine your skills, our instructors will guide you every step of the way.

7. Can I make up a missed class?
Absolutely! If you miss a class, you’re welcome to attend a different session that fits your schedule. We want you to stay consistent in your training and will help you find make-up opportunities.
8. Do I need special equipment to start?
To begin, all you need is athletic clothing or a loaner gi. As you continue training, we recommend investing in a Gracie Barra gi and rash guard, both available for purchase at our academy. We’ll guide you through any additional gear you might need, such as belts or mouthguards.
